We’re no stranger to the college dynamic, and believe us when we say that we understand where you’re coming from. Fortunately for you and your idle (or flat out overwhelmed) mind, there’s plenty to do and check out in the place that we’re proud to call home: Kent!
Discovering What’s In The Kent Area
In our original blog post, Kent’s Best Apartments took a good look at some places near our Kent apartments that, in our humble opinion, are worth checking out. However, due to the fact that Kent State University is so well-equipped, we didn’t get around to many places that are actually off-campus. That’ll be the main focus of today’s blog post!
Should you have any questions about finding your place at the Hickory Mills, Summit Hill or Whitehall Terrace Apartments, we’re here to help KSU students like you find the perfect off-campus living situation for next semester and semesters to come. Reach out to Kent’s Best Apartments today.

The Outpost Concert Club
Music isn’t just for focusing in on your studies as your roommates stomp around your student apartment. Why not drive down to The Outpost Concert Club with some friends and check out some local live music? As Kent’s self-acclaimed premier venue for live entertainment, you’ll find more than bands playing at this eclectic spot. With storytelling, stand up comedy, live radio recordings and other entertaining acts, there’s always something worthwhile going on at The Outpost.
If you’re exploring Kent looking for places worth your time, why not give Mike’s Place a try? This quirky eatery is known for a wide variety of American comfort food paired with funky decor and a generous happy hour. With an impressive 4.5 stars based on 1,417 Google Reviews, you’re sure to be charmed by Mike’s Place.
Heck, they even list 16 “Rules of Mike’s Place” on their website. Here’s rule #15: “No jousting with steak knives in the aisles please, it really doesn’t impress our waitresses anyway. To best capture their attention, try throwing cash.”
Kent Lanes – 11th Frame
If you’re bored out of your skull and all else fails, bowling is the answer. Whether you’re a strikes-only-fancy-bowler or you’re down to order a few pitchers of beer, pull up the bumpers and simply have a good time, it’s really hard to go wrong when you choose bowling as a way to spend time. Pro tip: if you’ve been set up on a double date by your pushy friend, bowling makes a great first double date. Why? That’s because people are constantly getting up to bowl their turn and then returning back to the ever-rotating group. It’s a fairly consistent social experience, and as a bonus, you get to show off your mad bowling skills.
Kent Lanes also offers sand volleyball for the warmer days of the year.
Old Kent Jailhouse
A jailhouse certainly isn’t the place that you want to spend an extended period of time, but fear not as you’ll be here on your own free will. The Old Kent Jailhouse is a well-known historical landmark in the area located near Fred Fuller Park and John Brown Tannery Park. Unbeknownst to some, this local landmark is actually used as a venue for hosting small parties, activities, and other private events.
With a capacity for seating around 22 people, it’s hardly a large venue, but it does serve as an interesting place to hold a little get together off-campus.
Scribbles Coffee Co.
If you’re in search of a great mom and pop coffee shop in Kent, look no further than Scribbles! Organic espresso drinks are their specialty, but they also deserve fantastic desserts and other quick cafe bites. They even offer an in-house Chai Flight! For lovers of chai, it doesn’t get much better than that.
